LMS Conversion: Blackboard to Canvas

End Users: Adult Learners in Higher Ed

Assisted on a team of 10+ instructional designers to convert Blackboard LMS courses into Canvas courses using a predetermined style guide and template. Converting LMS content is more than just copy/paste in most situations as an ID is usually making instructional designs on how to reword, reorder, and better organize content. Consistency in document file types and language is sought across all new courses in the new LMS instance.

Collaboration

Shared space on Microsoft OneDrive was used to manage coursework, course flow, content, and course assignments among the 30 staff involved in several hundreds of courses being converted. On average a course would take 10-40 hours to convert based on the content and severity of revisions and professor contact needed.

Syllabus

A new syllabus was created for each course and attached inside the LMS. The new syllabus required collaboration as well as many items were missing or inconsistent.

Resources Documentation

Every link/URL, book, document, pdf was manually documented by week on a separate document linked inside the LMS so students could identify paid and unpaid resources at a glance.

Project Management

For ease of tracking and due to so many moving pieces, a spreadsheet was created documenting each step along the process for each course.
